Well, we decided that a wonderful way to celebrate the 4th of July (since it was going to be 103 F here) was to declare independence from the junk in our basement. We took some work music (ABBA, Cake, Indigo Girls, Simon & Garfunkel) downstairs and set to work at putting all of the toys in the proper bins and throwing away things that are broken or were just junk to begin with. It was extremely liberating and the kids are actually excited to play down there again. I never should have let it go this long, but I've built up all sorts of avoidance behaviors about it. Having Allen there as a comrade in arms (really only one arm since his right one is out of commission while he recovers from his carpal tunnel surgery last week) really helped a lot. We came upstairs to make lunch and our stove wouldn't work which freaked us out. But by some brilliant logical problem solving we figured out that it was a power company problem not another failed appliance, so we called someone out and suffered without AC for a couple of hours while he replaced the local transformer. While this was happening we instituted nap time so that the girls would be able to stay up for fireworks. (Sarah of course couldn't manage to fall asleep, but she was quiet and didn't leave her bed so we let it count). We grilled hamburgers (I LOVE the instructions in the New Best Recipe cookbook -- best hamburgers ever --we add cheese and chives in addition to the salt&pepper). And then just played for a while after Kate went to bed before the fireworks started. The girls were probably as awed by the roman candles and stuff the neighbors were setting off in the cul-de-sac as they were by the (very impressive) display at BYU's stadium of fire (which we can see from our back porch). They made me promise that we would do some little fireworks of our own next year (we opted out this year because of Allen's hand and my lack of desire to do it alone). Altogether a fun day; we only wished we could have found some friends to have over to share the fun (and the clean basement).

Happy 4th of July!
Love the girls little July 4th outfits from Target! Aren't they cute?
